| Play
to Win |
I point
out this extreme example because not many players
realize that this same kind of thrill engendered
by anxiety is what they're really after at the
tables, not winning at all. And in the above scenario
it might have been worse if the man won his bet,
because then lesser bets wouldn't be thrilling
to him and he might spend the rest of his gambling
career betting in this frightening manner to keep
the thrills going.
Play to win. Bet to win. That should be the only
reason you gamble at all. Sure, there is a thrill
and excitement to gambling, but that should be
enhanced by winning. No one should play just for
the thrill, for that is too destructive a motive
in the long run. That's what all the losers do.
So remember the four steps we've discussed. Never
forget them and never disregard them if you want
to be a winner.
| 1. |
Make
only those bets which give the house its
lowest edge, only at those games which give
the player the best chance to win. In American
casinos these games are, in descending order:
blackjack, craps, and baccarat. |
| 2. |
Manage
your money wisely, taking into consideration
the total bankroll, the single-session bankroll,
losing and winning limits. Never lose more
than you take to any one table, and if winning,
leave the table a winner. |
| 3. |
Exercise
self-control at all times and never give
in to impatience or greed. Never try to
win more and more, when
the cards or dice turn against you, for
this is greedy and dangerous play. If losing,
never make bigger and bigger bets to try
to get even. |
| 4. |
Come
to the table confident about yourself and
your game. Play to win, not for any other
reason, and certainly not just for thrills,
excitement, and heightened anxiety. |
Follow these
principles. They'll make you a winner.
